Dr Bentley died eight weeks after a fall in his yard at home. He had been active as a charity worker and involved in civic affairs during the years he lived in Little Rock. He received the rank of Lt. colonel for meritorious service while serving as a surgeon during the Civil war. He served as post surgeon in 1878 at Little Rock barracks. After leaving the service in 1888, he returned to Little Rock. After the war he served at Russell and Lincoln Barracks in Washington, D.C..During the Modoc war in 1875 he went with the Fourth Artillery to the Black Hills. He also served time at Fort Clark and Fort Brown, Texas.At the time of his death he was survived by his wife and a son.
