Sold his inherited printing business to go to Ceylon as a Congregationalist missionary. He served his mission in India & Ceylon, 1833-1851.
William was well educated in Ceylon and then at Yale. he became a doctor and joined the Union army as a medical officer. Life story told in the work "The Surgeon of Crowthorne," by Simon Winchester. He was a paranoid schizophrenic, murderer, and lexicographer extraordinary. Also "The Professor and the Madman," by Simon Wincheser.

Met and married Eastman Strong Minor in Singapore, while both were serving as
missionaries. They served in Bangkok and Ceylon. Some years after being left
a widow, Judith returned to India where she remained until 1884.

May 1 1839, Joseph's Mother was granted the west half of the southeast
quarter of section 17, containing 80 Acers. Lusy deeded this land to
her son, Joseph, March 20 1842.
