3Barnes family file, Danbury Museum and Historical Society, Danbury, Connecticut,
A loose-leaf binder labeled Barnes Letters contains correspondence sent to Mary Cordelia Fuller during 1919 and 1920 concerning the family of her great-grandfather Ithamar Barnes of Roxbury, Conn. Information from the letters was incorporated by Miss Fuller in her work, The Descendants of Ithamar and Ana Thomas Barnes. The correspondence consists of 36 letters from 27 people and 17 family records listing names and dates. They provide information about four generations of the family. Events range from 1774-1920. Some information is from family Bibles and cannot be found anywhere else. While the majority of people resided in Connecticut, some information pertains to people in the states of Michigan, New York, and Washington. The principal surnames represented are: Barnes, Castle, Davenport, Downs, Hodge, Mead, Minor, Rathbun, Van Hoesen, and Way. The letters are an example of the interest in family history during the early 20th century, when correspondence was the primary method used to obtain information.

4Connecticut State Library, Hartford, Connecticut. Pages of family data from a Bible published by S. Andrus and Son, Hartford, 1844, were deposited at the Connecticut State Library, and transcribed in Connecticut Bible and Family Records, volume 23. The transcription is indexed as the family of Ithamer Barnes, the earliest person mentioned; however, the Bible was published the year his son George married, and only traces descendants of George Barnes. Therefore, it may be assumed the Bible belonged to George Barnes, not his father Ithamer. The information, which includes events in the 1930s, was maintained presumably by the children of George and Julia Barnes, who were most likely William Alling Barnes and or his sister Frances. All references contained herein are based on the original manuscript.

5The genealogy of the family of Ithamer and Ana Thomas Barnes is a section of The Barnes and Associated Lines, a manuscript by Mary Cordelia Fuller concerning her ancestry. The first page reads Property of Mary Cordelia Full, 15 Boughton Street, Danbury, Conn. April 1939, to be sent to my sister. January 30 1949, this book is to be sent to Mrs. Kingman Bailey, present address General Delivery, Edmonds, Wash. The manuscript was given to James William Hosking who indexed and bound the 5 1/2 by 8 1/2” sheets into three loose-leaf notebooks. The section entitled “The descendants of Ithamer and Ana Thomas Barnes of Roxbury, Conn. is contained in volume 3, pages 38-60. Miss Fuller based her work on letters that were deposited at the Danbury Museum and Historical Society.
