Bernard Eugene Davis Jr., 70, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away on Jan. 23, 2011, at the Victoria General.
Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late Bernard Eugene Sr. and Dorothy (Gould) Davis.
Bernie received his undergraduate degree from MIT, his master's from the University of North Carolina, and his Ph.D. in philosophy and linguistics from MIT, where he was a student of Noam Chomsky. He began his career at the University of Toronto, OISE. He moved to Halifax in 1970 to join the faculty of education at Saint Mary's University, from which he retired in 2007. He taught philosophy of education as well as courses in critical thinking and statistics.
Bernie also taught courses at Mount Saint Vincent University. He had a life long interest in ethics that was not based on religious beliefs.
Bernie was a member of Heritage Trust for many years and was passionate about the architecture of older buildings and their preservation. He enjoyed sailing, music, gardening and was a great cook.He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Margaret Matthews; step-daughters, Phoebe Smith of Ottawa and Nicola Smith of Halifax; sister, Cynthia D. (Dr. Thomas P.) Sculco and their children, Sarah Jane Sculco and Dr. Peter K. Sculco of New York, N.Y.; and brother, Dr. Lynn K. (Donna) Davis, and their daughter, Katie, of Glastonbury, Conn.
Donations may be given in his memory to the Heritage Trust for the Morris House Project.
She md (1) John Castile Murray, who was killed during a jet training accident after the Korean Conflict. She had four children by Murray. See article in "Minor Mirror," Winter 1999 (no. 33), p. 23.
