history. Our old home place location was: Iowa township 7 section 16
Range 17 West . the SE 1/4. The township was organized July 11 1879,
The south half of the SE1/4 was the farm we remember .The organization
and election of township officers was held at Lowell school house.
The book had a map of the county with each owner identified. James
Evans owned all of the land south of the railroad tracks. Evidently the 80
acres north of the old County road was later sold to the Look family.
Laura said that dad hurt his knee some time after the car wreck
working on the well at the school house. He was confined to the house for
a while and was delegated to churn butter. while mom was gone dad and
Merton Riemel rigged up a pulley system on his rocking chair to work the
handle up and down so as to churn while he rocked.
Ida Miner was a Free Methodist minister for many years being moved
from town to town about every 2 years. she served the church in Almena,
while there grandad left the farm, in about 1940 and moved in the
parsnage with her. The church moved her to Osborne Ks. where she
served. Grand-dad stayed on at the Almena parsonage as the church
caretaker. I went there on my way home from Montana and the Dekotas
wheat fields in 1947 or 1948. Aunt Ida hurt her back and came to live
with us while we still lived on the farm at Stockton.(. Pre 1940 )
While servng the church in Osborne Aunt Ida started an old peoples home.
The town didnt have a hospital so she dedicated a portion of the care
home as a delivery ward.( some time around 1952 , We went there while I
was in the Navy ) By then Grandad had moved from Almena to the care
home.
Mikes Miller's parents came to the delivery room and had Mike but
wouldnt take him home with them , so Aunt Ida kept him. ( she was
nearly 50 at the time) She then adopted Douglas ( She flew some where
to get him I know not where. Later on Clarence Hartmans wife died, they
had been members of the Church in Osborne . I and Dad went pheasant
hunting on their farm one time while I was in high school.
Clarence and Aunt Ida got married after Oct 1954 ( I was out of the
Navy by then. They came through Wichita on their honey moon. Aunt Ida
Was a beautiful bride at age 50 plus. I told her she was all mixed up that
you are suppose to get married then have a family.
I under stand that Clarence adopted the boys.
Aunt Ida has been in the Osborne care home for many years and doesnt
remember anything. I think Doug told me she went in the car home in
1983 She died February 27, 1995. She was Uncle Lester's beneficiary and
Doug said she had recieved $ 46.beneficiary check every month since
Lesters death June 1944. Ida is buried at the Osborne cemetery
Out side my immediate family I would say Aunt Ida had a great deal of
influence on my life. She was a grand person.
