12928. Charles Walter MINER

Charles Walter Miner b 30 April 1868 Bone Gap, Edwards Co. Ill.
Atwood and Lucy ( Walters father and mother) moved to Ks. after 1875 (
1880 census lists Eva as being born in Ill.
1880 Morris Co. Ks Walter Miner listed as 12
20 Sept.1888 he married Lutie May Kendall in Diamond Springs Ks. She
was born on 12 Jan. 1872 Parkersville Ks.
Attwood and Lucy are burried in Logan cemetery he died 5 Sept. 1900
therefore it is more than likely that Charles Walter moved to Phillips Co
before then. from birth records I think it was 1894 when they moved to
logan Ks..

Look at 1870 Edwards Co Ill. census for Atwood (granddad would have
been 2 years old)
I have the Morris Co.1880 census See Attwood notes
See if there is an 1885 state census for Morris and Chase Co.
I remember Grandad telling me he grew up on a cattle ranch on the
Cottonwood river in (I think Chase Co. )  He said he was raised on this
ranch , which was not Atwoods ranch.
In letter from Melvin Miner According to Grand-dads obituary when he
was 7 years old he moved to Morris Co Ks near Council Groves. To help
support the family he hired out to ranchers  and herded cattle and sheep
up untill the time he married. He was united in marriage to Lutie May
Kendall in 1887 and they immediatly went to farmng, the occupation he
followed through out his life. Fifty years ago he was converted and
joined the Free Methodist Church as a charter member at Cactus Ks. and
ever after proved his loyality and devotion to his churchby his
faithfullness and kind deeds to his loved ones, neigbors and friends

Lutie May KENDALL

Daughter of John Allen Kendall and Marthanne E. Burton.

Obituary for Lutie May Kendall Miner
"Lutie May Kendall was born January 12, 1872 at Parkerville, Morris
County , Kansas, and departed this life  at Logan ,Kansas, December 4,
1930, at the age of 58 years, 10 months, and 22 days. She was married at
Diamond Springs, Kansas,in 1888 to Mr. Walter Miner, who with their
children survive her. The bereft children are Mrs Velma Snow, Junction
City Kans.; Mrs Hazel Evans , Stockton Kans.; Mrs Inas Snodgress, Arvada
Colo.; Miss Ida Miner, Ralph, Lester, and Calvin, all of Logan,Kansas. She is
servived by two brothers, I.E. Kendall of Dewy Okla.; J.D. Kendall, Logan
and one sister, Mrs. Ida Atkinson of Logan, and 18 grandchildren, besides
other relatives and friends.
She had always lived a good moral life. Through reading  of a Sunday
School paper she learned of the new birth. Realizing her morality would
not save her , she sought the experience her heart longed for,and in her
own home she was converted and later joined the Free Methodist
church,to which she remained a very sincere and devoted member. Long
will her  ringing testimonies  and prayers linger in our memories.
She was all a mother could be , ever thoughtful of her loved ones and
was highly esteemed by allwho knew her. Her last sickness was one of
long duration, Though it all she was so patient , not a word of complaint.
Many who came to comfort her  were cheered themselves  by her sweet
and cheerful Christian spirit.
We morn, but not as such who are without hope, for we know that our
loss is heavens gain, where her spirit , free from mortal limitations
enjoys the fullness of life eternal and the mansions prepared for his
own, awaite the coming of His loved ones.
And now the time to us has come
When Mother's hands are folded;
To us the dearest,fairesthands
The master sculpture molded.
The angles kiss the loving eyes
And close the white fringed keeper
The pulsless breast is now at rest,
God keep the silent sleeper.

But let's not think of her as dead-
Just waiting over yonder,
In that fair land, with loving hand,
With sunshine land of wonder
We'll see her smile again someday
His promis still rings true-
I'll go and stay a little while,
And then come back to you."

Funeral services were held from the Cactus churchh Saturday afternoon,
December 6 and burial was made at Logan.

20535. Lester Glen MINER

LESTER GLEN MINER, born in 1912, entered the army in Feb.1942 and
trained until D day, June 6, 1944, when the invasion of Europe began.
From a copy of a letter to Thelma, dated June 25,1944 "somewhere in
France," his address was Co "A" 359 Inf., A P O 90.  Laura remembered
that he was killed at or near St. Lo, France.  In preparation for our trip I
looked at a book D DAY BEACHES REVISITED by Patrice Boussel.  Utah
beach was the code name for the beach both sides of a road leading to
Audouville-la-Hubert, France near the Vire River.  General Omar Bradley
commanded the forces landing on Utah Beach.  The 4th. Inf. was the first
to land on June 6, then the 90th., the 9th., and the 76th Inf. landed.
June 9th. Bradley moved south toward St. Lo.  On July 3, the day Lester
was killed, orders were issued to the 19 Corp to capture St. Lo. It wasn't
'til July 7--after house to house and room to room combat--that the
town was secured. The town of St. Lo was 90% destroyed in the battle.
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located at St.
Laurent,France. 172.5 acres of U. S. soil donated by the French on the
cliff above Omaha beach, where 9,386 American War Dead are buried.
On June 9 ;1990 we visited the cemetery, and went straight to the
visitors center and asked if Lester was buried there. The  receptionist
found Lester G. Miner SN 37155714,   359 Inf., 90 Div. listed and his
grave  location of Plot 1, Row 1, Grave 22.  She asked us if we were
family members. When we said yes She asked if we would like to have
our picture made with  his grave stone. She took us to Lesters grave
marker, and took wet sand and spread in the lettering and  brushed off
the excess sand. The sand made the letters look like they were filled
with gold. She took my picture with the marker and  had us stop by the
office on our way out, she had  a packet with information about Lester
and the cemetery, including how we can send flowers.
Lester's grave is near the center of the cemetery and is located next
to a  area with a small tree and some bushes. It was very touching ,the
receptionist treated us so very nice. We walked around the rest of the
cemetery and looked down at Omaha beach. We then drove to St. Lo about
25 miles South of the beach, to see what it looked like. It looked like a
thriving normal mid sized city built in a valley.
We also visited  the Memorial museum at Caen France, Where we
learned about the house to house and room to room fighting at St Lo.
The visit to Lesters grave was very touching , we may have been the
first in the family to visit his grave, and it has been there 46 years.
