Daniel brought Mary Ann from Chicago to New York. On 4 Dec 1869 he
was rushing to get a mid-wife to attend the birth of their baby. He took
a short-cut across the surface of the ice pond, the ice broke and he fell
in and was drowned. His widow returned to Illinois with the child and
apparently remarried as she was referred to as Mrs. Mary A. Wilson in
William Merritt's will.
Sanford maintained and farmed the Merritt family homestead at Towners, New York, from the death of his father until his own death, after which the entire farm was sold.
