Widow Of Former Local Pastor Dies
Mrs. Ellen L. Underhill, widow of Rev. W.H. Underhill, died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.B. Cross, 537 Norwood-av. Mr. Underhill was the first pastor of East Congregational church and was the leader in the movement that gave the society its first church home which was incorporated in the structure as it stands today.
Mrs. Underhill is survived by five daughters and five sons: Mrs. Cross, Mrs. Blanch Zichgraf of Jellico, Tenn., Mrs. Ella Berry of Gaylord, Mich., Mrs. Ada Taylor of Clio, Mich., Mrs. Jessie Karslake of Vanderbilt, Mich., John and Charles Underhill of Flint and Elmer, Fred and Clayton Underhill of Clio. Private services will be held at the residence Thursday night and burial will be at Clio Friday.

OCCUPATION: CONGREGATIONLIST MINISTER; SEE PAGE FROM BOOK ENTITLED, "THE TALE
OF THE YEARS IN EAST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH"; BY ANDRUS AND MORRIS; He was first
a Methodist minister in Pine Run, then a Congregational minister in Vanderbilt,
then a Congregational minister in Grand Rapids; He was a carpenter & machinist
& bricklayer; He built the Congregational church in Vanderbilt which was still
being used in 1992; He was the first minister at the church across from Gladys
Tufford Underhill in Clio;

RESIDENCE: He lived several years in Canada, Pine Run & Thetford; At the time
of his death he was living in Vanderbilt;

BIRTH: 1870 Census; Clio, Vienna, MI; Enum 29 Jul 1870; Death certificate of
son, Clayton, says that William was born in Clio, Vienna, MI; Blanche Bell
Underhill Zickgraf said that William Henry was born 3 months after his father,
Charles Henry Underhill died, and that his mother died in childbirth.;

CAUSE OF DEATH: Pneumonia

PHYSICAL: He was 6'2" tall; a strong and husky man;

HISTORY: William had a sawmill on his farm in Clio, one year he cut down a big
straight hardwood tree and let it lay for a winter to season. Next winter,
after triming the tree, he fixed it for the main shaft in his sawmill. He
soaked the tree in raw linseed oil for that winter. One end of this shaft was
hooked to the steam engine. Three or four bearings held the shaft in place. All
of the machines in the mill were hooked to that shaft by belts.

corners on the north side of the road, stood the foundry and machine shop of
William Tinker & Son, who came to the locality in 1865, they were first class
mechanics who could make almost anything that could be fashioned from iron,
steel or wood, at one time they made shingles and cheese boxes. He built a
track & cart to bring the logs to the second floor for sawing, William Jr. was
5'7", These buildings burned in 1915, He was town supervisor in Midland county
during the 70's; He was school director at Pine Run for 18 years and also a
farmer.
