LYMAN B. SHERWOOD
Lyman B. Sherwood, a well known farmer, of Southeast, died at his home in that town, on Friday afternoon of last week, about 4:30 o'clock, of pneumonia, with which he was attacked on the previous Tuesday.
Deceased was the youngest son and child of the late Lyman and Betsey Minor Sherwood. Ho was born on the old Sherwood homestead, in Southeast, Nov. 22, 1824. His father, Lyman Sherwood, who was a descendant of a well known Connecticut family, lived to an advanced age, dying on June 2, 1877,in his 96th year. His four brothers, Jehiel, James M., Nathan and Charles, and three sisters, Sarah, wife of William Fowler, and the Misses Charlotte and Jeanette Sherwood, have died within the past fifty years. His death leaves one sister, Miss Delia Sherwood, of Southeast, the only surviving member of that family of nine children.
In early manhood he married Miss Sarah Banks, of Connecticut, and five daughters and one son were born to them, the latter dying in boyhood. His wife passed away some four years ago. He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Inez Duel [sic] and Aurelia Sherwood, of Southeast; Sarah E. , wife of Isaac
Hawley, Cornelia, wife of Amos T. Camp, of Hawleyville, Conn., and Eva, wife of Sumner P. Bailey, of White Plains. He also leaves a second wife to whom he was married about two years.Mr. Sherwood had been a farmer all of his working life and understood his business well. Unlike some, he did not run in one groove, but was interested in various branches of husbandry, taking pleasure and pride in raising [illegible] fruit and poultry and other products. He was at one time an enthusiastic propagator of German carp and had an extensive fish pond on his premises. For years he had been an exhibitor at the Carmel and Danbury Fairs, and carried off many premiums. He possessed considerable inventive genius, and with S.M. Brewster invented and patented a bog-cutter, which is recognized as an agricultural implement of merit.
Any faults that he had were not of the heart, for he was a kind-hearted man, charitable in disposition and of obliging ways. He was a hard worker on any project which he undertook.
The funeral services were conducted at his late residence on Monday at 2 p.m., by Rev. Dr. Stowitts, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Brewster, who delivered a discourse based on the text found in James 4th, chapter 14th verse, "What is your life?" The remains were interred in the Old Southeast Cemetery beside his first wife.
