He was a lawyer in Philadelphia in 1880.
Samuel S. attended the public schools until 12 years of age, when he attended the Wethersfield Academy until his 16 year. He learned the trade of shoemaking, at which he continued until 1830. From 1830 to 1832, he was engaged at Hartford, Connectiuct, in establishing and conducting the shoe factory of his uncle, Normand Smith. In 1833 he came to Kentucky and located at Maysville, where he started a shoe business with remarkable success. A member of the Baptist Church
