PROVO.
DEATH OF NEWEL KNIGHT.
Unexpected Summons of Well Known Citizen – News Notes.
Special Correspondence.
Provo, May 25. – Newel Knight, a well known Provo citizen, died most unexpectedly last night about 7 o’clock while seated at the supper table. He had been in his usual health all day, and was feeling well when he sat down to the supper table. During the progress of the meal he leaned back in his chair and on being asked “what is the matter,” replied, quietly, “I don’t know” and immediately expired.
Mr. Knight was the son of Newel and Lydia Knight. His father was one of the prominent characters in the early history of the Church. He was born in Nauvoo 64 years ago. His father died at Little Ponca, Nebraska, in January 1847, while the family was on its way to Utah after the exodus from Nauvoo, and came to Utah with his mother and his brothers and sisters in 1850. The greater part of his life has been spent in Provo, and for several years has been engaged in the implement business. He has served two terms as city marshal, and was esteemed as one of Provo’s solid citizens. He leaves a wife and five children by a former marriage, two brothers, Jesse Knight of this city, and Samuel Knight of St. George, who happens to be here on a visit; two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Palmer of salt Lake, and Mrs. Artemesia White of Payson, and numerous other relatives.10Published in the Deseret News Tuesday 28 May 1907, page 3.
